Why Aldi Is a Smart Choice for Healthy Eating on a Budget

Aldi is a great place to buy healthy food on a budget. In recent years, they have added more organic options. We shop at Aldi often for organic groceries.

Our Monthly Grocery Budget Breakdown

Our grocery budget is $800 a month. This not only includes food, but also items such as supplements, cleaners, and personal care items. It takes careful planning to stick to our budget. When I pay close attention, we can keep our total for the month around $800.

How to Eat Healthy on a Budget – Shop at Aldi

One of the ways I accomplish buying mostly organic food and staying in budget is by shopping at Aldi because they have so many organic options at a bargain price!

My Mostly Organic Aldi Grocery Haul

Non-organic peaches were on sale for $1.85 a lb. If I come across fruit that my family likes on sale for a really good price, I will buy it even if it is not organic.

Organic Romaine Hearts were $3.69.

10 lbs. of Russet Potatoes were $4.69.

Watermelon was $4.65. This is one fruit I really don’t mind buying conventional since the rind is so thick.

Organic sprouted bread was $3.29 a loaf. I prefer making mine own bread, but to be honest, homemade bread doesn’t work well for packed lunches. I buy organic bread to have on hand to pack my husband’s lunch.

Organic sourdough bread was $4.29 a loaf.

Mozzarella cheese was $1.85 for 8 ounces.

Organic tomato basil sauce and marinara sauce were both $2.19 for 23.5 ounces.

Organic whole wheat spaghetti was $1.99 for 16 ounces. This is a great price for organic pasta!

Organic fusilloni was $2.89 for 16 ounces.

Organic cage-free eggs were $4.85 for 1 dozen.

Whole milk was $2.91 a gallon.

Organic whole-milk plain yogurt was $3.99 for 32 ounces.

Cottage cheese was $2.79.

Butter was $3.49 for 16 ounces.

Organic apple juice was $2.89 for 64 ounces.

Organic black cherry plum juice was $2.99 for 64 ounces.

Uncured Bacon was $4.79 for 12 ounces. This is a great price for uncured bacon without any nitrates, so I bought 3 packages!

Organic whole chicken was $2.79 a lb. Not only will I use the meat, but I will use the chicken bones to make 10-12 cups of bone broth, so this is a great price!

Organic grass-fed ground beef was $5.49 a lb. This price is comparable to Costco’s for organic grass fed beef.

Dark chocolate and milk chocolate were $2.99 for 4.40 ounces.

Organic smoked turkey breast was $5.45 for 6 ounces.

Broccoli was $1.15 for 12 ounces.

The total for this Aldi haul was $141.60.

Final Grocery Spending for the Month

Another Aldi trip at the beginning of the month was $36.62. Our monthly Costco haul was $364.30. A Walmart haul was $112.76. Supplements and coffee from Amazon were $118.17. I also purchased cough herbal medicine for $35.63.

My grand total for this month is $809.08. I am over our grocery budget by nine dollars and eight cents. However, for that amount, I was able to buy a lot of real food to nourish my family this month. It is possible to feed your family well on a budget!

Final Thoughts on Eating Healthy and Staying on Budget

Eating well on a budget really comes down to being intentional. I’m not out here buying everything organic or making gourmet meals every night, but I do try to focus on real food and stretch our grocery dollars as far as I can. Shopping at Aldi makes it so much easier to stay on track without sacrificing quality. It’s not always perfect, but with a little planning, it’s totally doable—and definitely worth it.
